Non-woven Fabric 101: Understanding the Different Types Used in Hygiene Products

If you are in the business of manufacturing or branding hygiene products, you already know that the "touch" of a product often determines its market success. Whether it is the topsheet of a sanitary napkin or the leg cuffs of a baby diaper, the material doing the heavy lifting is almost always non-woven fabric.
But "non-woven" isn't just one material. It is a vast category of engineered fabrics with vastly different properties. Choosing the wrong type can lead to production line stoppages, skin irritation for the end-user, or—the ultimate brand killer—leakage.
At Family Cares, we believe that an informed buyer is a successful partner. Let’s break down the science and application of non-woven fabrics in the hygiene sector.

Nonwoven Fabric: What Is It Really?

Nonwovens are different from conventional weaving and knitting materials in that they are textile materials whose fiber components are bound to each other through chemical, physical, and thermal bonding. In terms of hygienic production, polypropylene (PP) resin is usually used for nonwoven production.
The beauty of non-woven fabric lies in its versatility. By adjusting the bonding method, we can make a fabric that is as soft as silk, as strong as a plastic sheet, or as porous as a coffee filter.

The "Big Three" Non-woven Types in Personal Care

When you look at our product list, you will see several technical acronyms. Here is what they actually mean for your product performance:

1. Spunbond Nonwoven (S, SS, SSS)

Spunbond is the workhorse of the hygiene world. Manufacturing involves forcing the heated polymer through a spinneret, resulting in filaments that are joined together through the process of heating.
  • S (Single Layer): Minimum strength; only used for basic wrapping purposes.
  • SSS (Triple Layer): This product is regarded as the best in making backsheets and waistbands of diapers. It offers exceptional softness along with excellent tensile strength.
  • Significance of this: The use of SSS makes sure that the diaper tabs do not tear during pulling.

2. SMS/SMMS (Spunbond-Meltblown-Spunbond)

SMS is a "sandwich" fabric. The "M" layer (meltblown) acts as a microscopic filter, while the "S" layers provide strength.
  • The Barrier King: SMS is naturally hydrophobic (water-repellent).
  • Application: If you look at the "leak guards" (the inner ruffles) of a diaper, that is SMS fabric. It allows air to circulate but prevents liquid from seeping through the sides.

3. Air-through (Hot Air) Non-woven

This is the "premium" choice. Instead of using pressure rollers, the fibers are bonded using hot air. This keeps the structure incredibly "lofty" and bulky.
  • The "Cloud-like" Feel: Air-through nonwoven is used for the topsheet (the layer touching the skin). It is exceptionally soft and reduces friction, making it ideal for sensitive baby skin or post-partum care.

Functionality: Hydrophilic vs. Hydrophobic

One of the most common mistakes procurement managers make is not specifying the surface treatment of their non-woven fabric.
  • Hydrophilic Nonwoven: This fabric loves water. We treat the fabric with surfactants so that liquid passes through it instantly into the absorbent core. It is very important in making sure that the top surface of the pad remains dry.
  • Hydrophobic Nonwoven: This material repels water. It was designed with the intention of blocking moisture. It is the most ideal material for use as the backsheet or outer cover of the product.

The Technical Specs: How to Evaluate Your Non-woven Fabric

When sourcing from a professional hygiene raw material supplier, don’t just ask for the price. Focus on these three metrics:

1. GSM (Grams per Square Meter)

GSM measures the weight and density. A 12gsm fabric is thin and breathable; a 25gsm fabric is thick and durable. In the B2B world, optimizing GSM is the key to balancing "premium feel" with "unit cost."

2. Tensile Strength (MD and CD)

The tensile strength of the material in both machine direction (MD) and cross direction (CD) are essential features needed to facilitate quick manufacturing. This material will be easily torn during conversion in case it has low tensile strength, thus incurring losses in your manufacturing facility.

3. Strike-Through Time

For hydrophilic fabrics, this is the time it takes for a liquid to pass through the sheet. The faster the strike-through, the better the "dry feel" for the consumer.

Why Family Cares Is Your Strategic Nonwoven Partner

As an integrated manufacturer and exporter, Family Cares doesn't just "flip" materials. We understand the chemistry behind the roll.
  • Consistency Across Batches: We know that a slight change in the PP resin grade can change the "hand-feel" of your diapers. We maintain strict QC to ensure the SSS fabric you buy today feels exactly like the batch you bought six months ago.
  • Customization: Need a 3D embossed pattern for better fluid distribution? Or a specific "super-soft" finish for an adult incontinence line? We customize the non-woven specs to match your machine requirements.
  • One-Stop Sourcing: Why deal with five suppliers when you can get your non-woven fabric, SAP, and PE films in one container? Shipping is made cheaper and easier to monitor.

Moving Ahead: The Green Way

Plastics made from petroleum alone are becoming less and less popular in the industry. There has been a rise in the use of PLA non-wovens and bamboo fiber blends. While these are currently higher in cost, they offer a massive marketing advantage for eco-conscious brands. If you are looking to launch a "green" line, let's talk about our sustainable non-woven options.

Conclusion: Don't Compromise on the Foundation

In the hygiene industry, your product is only as good as the materials inside it. These qualities can be obtained using non-woven fabrics. It will be wise to select the correct types of spunbond, SMS, and air-through fabrics to ensure that your customers are dry and comfortable.
