Why Breathability Matters in Feminine Hygiene Products

Feminine comfort is dependent on more than just absorption. A sanitary pad may absorb the fluid fast but might be warm and moist. This calls for manufacturers to think about ventilation, moisture management, softness, and fluid distribution all at once.

What Does Breathability Mean in Feminine Hygiene?

Breathability refers to the ability of the absorbent article to handle air, heat, and moisture vapor close to the skin. Breathability does not refer to liquids being able to flow out from the bottom of the pad.
Rather, breathability is an attempt to decrease the warm and closed-in sensation caused by wearing the absorbent article for too long.

Air Permeability and MVTR Are Different

Air permeability is the degree to which air can move through a fabric. Openness in a nonwoven structure will increase the flow of air. There needs to be a balance between airflow and strength and liquid movement in a product.

A material may perform well during an individual laboratory test. However, its properties can change after compression, embossing, lamination, or adhesive application.
For example, an airlaid layer may initially have an open structure. Heavy compression can close its internal spaces. Likewise, continuous adhesive coverage may restrict vapor movement.
Therefore, manufacturers should test the complete sanitary pad. This approach provides a clearer picture of actual performance.

Why Breathability Matters to Product Users

Feminine hygiene products remain close to sensitive skin for several hours. During that time, body heat, movement, menstrual fluid, and limited ventilation may create a humid microclimate.

The technical data sheet makes for a good starting point. It is not, however, a substitute for prototyping and testing.

1. Verify the basis weight, width, caliper, and roll specifications.
2. Examine the information on fiber content and latex adhesive composition.
3. Determine absorption speed, capacity, retention, and rewet.
4. Compare air permeability and MVTR.
5. Perform tests for dry and wet tensile strength.
6. Assess softness, odor, dust, and surface feel.
7. Conduct tests on the intended production line speed.
8. Conduct tests for the complete assembled pad under pressure and motion.
It is also important to find out from the supplier if it is possible to customize the width, basis weight, absorbency, or composite structure of the material.

Common Sourcing Mistakes to Avoid

The first mistake is choosing a material by absorption capacity alone. A high-capacity layer may still distribute fluid slowly or create high surface rewet.
The second mistake is treating breathability as one test number. Air permeability, MVTR, and finished-product microclimate provide different information.
The third blunder is using an excess of the adhesive. Bonding is essential for manufacturing, but constant coverage will prevent useful channels from developing.
The fourth blunder is not conducting any trial runs during the production process. The fabric may be soft to touch, yet at the speed of manufacturing equipment, it can easily tear.
Finally, be specific when giving requirements – do not use vague terms like “soft and breathable.”

Build a More Comfortable Feminine Hygiene Product

Breathability needs to coexist with absorption, leakage management, softness, and integrity. Airlaid latex-bonded paper can be used for this purpose due to its porosity and handling of fluids, along with its bonding characteristics.
Nevertheless, this material needs to be tested within the whole system of the pad. The best performance can be achieved when the airlaid layer is combined with an appropriate topsheet, core, backsheet, and adhesive layout.
